Dallas Restaurant Review:

York Street
is a great little restaurant that is off the beaten path both in location and menu.  But the foodies have found it, and Gourmet Magazine named it a Top 50 restaurant in the U.S.  It gets 4 Stars from the Dallas Morning News.

SETTING  -  A tiny building on the lower end of Skillman in old east Dallas.  It’s a quiet neighborhood that looks like it hasn’t changed much since the 1940’s.  As you approach the building, you immediately sense that this meal will be no ordinary experience.

FOOD  -  The menu is not huge, but the food is impressive, and the offerings evolve daily according to what’s in season and what’s fresh in the markets.  Every item is creative and original.  The menu one day might include Texas Axis Venison with Hominy & Red Molé, Braised Rabbit with Chick Pea Polenta, and Niman Ranch Pork Chop with Crowder Peas and Carrots; then a few days later the polenta and peas & carrots might be paired with other entrées.  No two days are exactly alike..  Prices for entrees run in the $25-$30 range.

WINE  -  The wine list is also off the beaten path, quite extensive but with California labels being in the minority.   There are several dozen Big Dog wines on the Reserve list.  No bar.

AMBIANCE  -  This hidden gem is small – 12 tables.  Customers are warmly greeted, and the ones who are recognized (and there seem to be quite a few) get handshakes and hugs.  The interior décor consists of clean blacks, whites, and creams – part New York, part Left Bank.

Downside?  -  Only open for lunch on Wednesday.  Dinner Tues-Sat.

RESERVATIONS  -  With 12 tables and its fast-growing reputation, reservations are highly recommended, and for Friday & Saturday nights, a day or two ahead wouldn't hurt.  I also suggest a visit to their web site.

BOTTOM LINE  - Owner/chef Sharon Hage has been at the helm of York Street for 8 years now, and she has transformed it into the absolute antithesis of a chain restaurant.  It is warm, intimate, creative (unpredictable even) -- and comfortable with being its own unique, unpretentious self.
