Dallas Restaurant Review:
Looking for a classy place at a decent price? Sevy's has hit the “sweet spot” in the
restaurant biz – great food, polished service, reasonable prices, and an elegant but
comfortable interior.
SETTING – Straddling the boundary between old-money Preston Hollow (in near north Dallas)
and the prestigious Park Cities.
APPETIZERS – Sevy's buttery-smooth Kobe Beef Skewers are to die for. I know people who
order them as an entree. Also: Crispy Duck Flautas, Skillet Seared Jumbo Scallops, and the
best Crispy Calamari Rings I’ve ever tasted.
ENTREES – No surprise that Sevy’s made the “Best in Dallas” honor roll in D Magazine. Their
lightly smoked Beef Tenderloin Filet melts in your mouth. Among the many other choices are a
Bone-in Ribeye, Fresh Atlantic Salmon, Wild Game Mixed Grill, Maine Lobster Linguini (plus
several other excellent pastas), and a falling-off-the-bone Osso Buco. Prices $19-$28.
Mashed potatoes reach new heights with your choice of 4 flavors, including truffle-whipped,
garlic-whipped, and buttermilk chive.
BAR – Has a loyal following and attracts a nicely-dressed crowd, including sports celebrities
and well-known business figures. (And I swear that I’m not a lush, but I do admit that they
put my name on a brass plate on the bar.) A great bar has great drinks, and the drinks at
Sevy's are full-sized. James, the bartender, has made Dallas Observer’s “Best Bartenders in
Dallas” list. The sound of the cocktail shakers is like music to my ears.
WINE – Good selection, reasonable prices. The wait-staff also carries a pocket-sized list of
big-dog wines for those who know to ask.
AMBIANCE – Sevy's restaurant has an easy elegance – upscale but not pretentious –
hardwood floors, natural stone and woods, and a touch of Frank Lloyd Wright. There’s also a
nice patio. Owner & celebrity chef Jim Severson (Sevy) periodically cruises the dining room,
greeting customers and cracking jokes.
RESERVATIONS – Not a bad idea. But if there's a brief wait, just drift on into the bar.
You may see someone you recognize.
BOTTOM LINE – You won’t be disappointed at Sevy’s.
