| Santa Fe Restaurant Review: Orlando's is a local favorite run by Orlando & Yvette Ortega, and serves New Mexico style Mexican food. It has been voted “People’s Choice, Best Mexican Food in Taos”. SETTING - Orlando's New Mexican Cafe is on Highway 64 (Paseo de Pueblo Norte) leading north out of Taos toward the Taos ski area and the spectacular Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, both just a few miles away. There's a shady and very popular patio in front. FOOD - The food is home style & hot – the real thing – New Mexico favorites like blue corn enchildas and carne adovada. Among the best plates (all under $10) are “Los Colores”, which is 3 rolled blue corn enchiladas: one chicken with green chile, one beef with red chile, one cheese with caribe sauce (the flavorful and slightly spicy adovado sauce), plus posole and beans. Another favorite is “Los Primos”, which is a Pork tamale and a chile relleno, with choice of red or green chile, plus posole and beans. There's a good selection on the menu -- guaranted to have something you like. You can wash it all down with exotic teas (this being new-age Taos), ice-cold beer served in a frosted mug, or one of several wines served by the glass or bottle. No bar. Great pies and other baked goods for dessert. AMBIANCE - As you can see in the photos, this is a small, family-run place. The interior is colorful and festive. I have never been there that I didn’t notice restaurant regulars greeting each other or being greeted by the owners. To get to the tidy little restroom in the back, you have the privilege of a brief tour of the kitchen en route, which adds atmosphere. BOTTOM LINE - Let me put it this way: When I'm driving from Santa Fe to Colorado, I'll take a 40-mile detour to Taos -- just to have lunch at Orlando's. 'Nuff said. |
