La Choza Mexican 905 Alarid St., Santa Fe 505-982-0909
Santa Fe Restaurant Review:
If you want to get away from the tourists, La Choza restaurant is the authentic Santa Fe hideaway that you won't find downtown. But you won't dine alone, because it attracts a steady clientele of knowledgeable locals who have voted it, along with Maria's (just 2 blocks away), as the top two authentic "New Mexican" restaurants in the city.
SETTING - An old adobe hacienda a mile or two south of the plaza, a stone's throw from the intersection of Cerrillos Road and St. Francis.
FOOD - Classic northern New Mexican, and well prepared. The blue corn enchiladas and the Carne Adovada -- and everything else I've tried -- are outstanding. Save room for the big sopaipilla drizzled with honey after the meal. La Choza now has a full bar and a dozen kinds of margaritas. This is the real thing. No tourists and no tourist prices.
AMBIANCE - Unpretentious, old-time Santa Fe. Wood and brick floors, adobe walls, exposed vigas (the heavy logs supporting the ceilings). From May to September, they have a nice little outdoor courtyard where they serve you under the old apple trees (and when September comes, watch out for the falling apples). They recently opened a second, larger patio. Business is steady, but there is rarely a wait.
BOTTOM LINE - I've been here again and again. La Choza has great Mexican food and an off-the-beaten-path, "old Santa Fe" feel.
