Santa Fe Restaurant Review:

Geronimo
restaurant is one of the most highly lauded in New Mexico.  Honors include 4 Stars
from Mobil Travel Guide, the AAA 4 Diamond Award, and the Wine Spectator Award of
Excellence.

SETTING - Geronimo is located in a 1760-era home (built by Geronimo Lopez) among the
dozens of art galleries on trendy, narrow, twisting Canyon Road, less than a mile from the
square.  The outside is "Territorial" (western), while the interior is more contemporary.

FOOD - The prices match the food.  Among the appetizers ($14-$22), my favorite is the
Spicy Maryland Blue Crab Cakes, possibly the best I've ever had.  Next, I suggest their
signature entree, the Peppery Elk Tenderloin With Roasted Garlic Fork-Mashed Potatoes and
a Cream Brandied Mushroom Sauce.  Words cannot do it justice.  One of the wait staff
described it to two ladies at the adjacent table as a "man's dish" (I guess that means not a
salad or chicken), but I think anyone would enjoy it.  Or there's the Fiery Sweet Chile and
Honey Grilled White Prawns or the excellent Colorado Lamb Rack with Lambshank Risotto.
The menu evolves with the seasons.   Entrees $35-$45.  They have an extensive wine list,
$50-$150, and the less expensive labels are just fine.  And I don't often eat desserts, but I
can highly recommend the Trio of Creme Brulees ($10 - Venezuelan Chocolate, Brown Sugar,
and Coconut), each one a taster served in its own dish.  The service, as you would expect, is
silky smooth.

AMBIANCE - Being in an old home that pre-dates the United States, the restaurant is
comprised of several rooms.  You are greeted inside the door by a sculpture which is a
gargantuan set of bleached and varnished moose antlers on the creamy white contemporary
walls.  There is a charming and intimate little bar down the hall.  I arrive 15 minutes ahead to
have a cocktail there. To find out more about the restaurant, click
here (the last time I
checked, their web site was being updated).

RESERVATIONS - Strongly advised.

BOTTOM LINE - Geronimo restaurant has it all ... atmosphere, food, wine.  It makes for a
memorable evening.

(Geronimo used to serve lunch in the summer, but they discontinued that.  However,  if you'd
like to eat on their spacious porch and watch the action on Canyon Road, they still serve dinner
there.)
