Puerto Vallarta Restaurant Review:

Many American visitors never venture far from the tourist hangouts.  But there are a number
of wonderful restaurants just a few blocks from the water, back in very safe neighborhoods
where Gringos are welcomed.

Si Señor is one of them, and a pleasant surprise -- not at all what I was expecting.  From the
name, I would have guessed it was touristy Mexican.  What you get is much more interesting.

SETTING - Perched on the hillside, 4 blocks above the Malecon downtown.  The entrance and
interior are sleek and elegant, graced with contemporary art.  There is a spacious balcony on
the front and two shady, tropical patios a few steps up from the entrance.  The local owners
previously lived in the U.S., so Americans feel right at home.

FOOD - Traditional and upscale Mexican.  First, you get complimentary chips with 3 Tomatillo
and Guajillo sauces.  The guacamole is made fresh at your table.  You can choose from a variety
of traditional Mexican dishes (including 4 different mole's), but I suggest also looking at the
Specialties, which you can view by going to their
web site.  My personal favorite is the
Carnitas -- shredded roast pork served sizzling on an iron skillet.  Or you may decide on the
Lobster Tacos.  Or the Mezcal Shrimp, flamed in front of you.  Most entrees are accompanied
by rice and some incredibly thick, intense black beans.

AMBIANCE - Cool and semi-contemporary with warm, friendly service.  The excellent
margaritas are  mixed at the table.

RESERVATIONS - Not necessary the times that I've been there, unless you have a very
large party.

BOTTOM LINE - Not inexpensive, but among the best.  Si Senor is one of Puerto Vallarta's
hidden jewels, away from the crowds.
